Sump pumps are installed to handle ground water from under and around the building. They mostly work the hardest during rain or a thaw of the snow in the area.
Most common problem with sump pump systems is the pit is undersized which cause the pump to short cycle (turn off and back on in less than a minute). The short cycling of a sump pump will shorten the life of a pump.
Installing a higher horse powered pump will not solve the issue. Higher horsepower helps with how high the pump needs to lift the water out of the basement.
